Brad Pitt’s Objection to Religion
October 10th, 2007 by James GrantParade has an interview with Brad Pitt on religion. It seems that Brad Pitt grew up Southern Baptist, and he eventually rejected the faith when he got in college. His objection to religion sounds very familiar:
“Guilt is the thing I find most evil about it. It’s the thing I rail against the most. . . Religion works. I know there’s comfort there, a crash pad. It’s something to explain the world and tell you there is something bigger than you, and it is going to be alright in the end. It works because it’s comforting. I grew up believing in it, and it worked for me in whatever my little personal high school crisis was, but it didn’t last for me. I didn’t understand this idea of a God who says, ‘You have to acknowledge me. You have to say that I’m the best, and then I’ll give you eternal happiness. If you won’t, then you don’t get it!’ It seemed to be about ego. I can’t see God operating from ego, so it made no sense to me.”
Behind this statement are some valid questions that we should consider about the faith. John Piper has been addressing this important issue for several years [see also Desiring God Resources, and specifically this: "Is God for Us or for Himself?"]. Denny Burk also has a helpful response to Pitt’s concerns here.

Seems like Brad Pitt could really benefit from some good Piperian thoughts on “God’s passion for His glory” and how that’s very different from the human concept of ego.

No kidding. Burk did a good job in his post, but this is the kind of stuff Piper has been hitting on all his life.

See the Baptist Church needs to be asking okay, where did we go wrong?
Brad Pitt is a perfect example of many who are feeling guilt, and not the love of God. I would much rather an individual experience the love of God instead of the law of God. Everyone in their right minds can tell you what the laws of Christianity are. However one experiencing love may have a limited experience.
Also Piper is not a good reference for Pitt. Piper uses way too big of theological words for an average person to understand. Also how Piper languages the grace of God is way too ambiguous. Piper is the pastor who makes people feel guilty. Pitt is the byproduct of the Piper/reformers theology/doctrine.
This doctrine produces a bitter person who does not want to walk into the halls of the church because he knows he will only feel guilty……….
That is messed up!
I am sorry Brad Pitt!!
