Some Healthy Aspects of Family Life
December 22nd, 2008 by James GrantBarnabas Piper has a guest post at 22 Words, the blog of his brother Abraham Piper. The guest post is “22 things I admire about my parents on their 40th anniversary.” What I find helpful about this post are the many normal things that Barnabas remembers. We are often tempted to forget these things when we think of families like the Pipers. So, here are a few practical things that I took away from his post:
- Have an open door policy, allowing people to visit at any time.
- Be available for your children, their friends, and their family.
- Lean against the culture by loving and rejoicing in children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
- Enjoy going to church.
- Have guests over for meals, and include them in family devotions.
- Encourage creativity and hobbies.
Read Barnabas’ whole post for other ideas.

That is good. I most especially like number three. I hope we can one day change culture and have to rewrite the point though. I find Number five difficult as well. We have had people join in our devotions, and I still feel pretty awkward. Mainly because it is a very vulnerable time. What if they understand better than I do or how will they look at me if I make a mistake. I know they are selfish reason, but my reasons none the less.
